# Action Plan: Before, During & After Layoff

Head of Digital, asset management · Age 62 · Cliffside Park, NJ · Sole income. Layoff certain this month; not yet official. Goal: protect cash and healthcare, then land income that covers rent quickly.

Working principle

Big-title digital searches burn time after multiple layoffs. Keep asset-management digital as the primary path. Add a concurrent cash path only if the digital pipeline is too slow to cover rent and healthcare.

[Phase 01](https://www.demandignition.com/nextchapter#phase-1)[Phase 02](https://www.demandignition.com/nextchapter#phase-2)[Phase 03](https://www.demandignition.com/nextchapter#phase-3)[Phase 04](https://www.demandignition.com/nextchapter#phase-4)[Non-negotiables](https://www.demandignition.com/nextchapter#non-negotiables)

Phase 01

## Before the official announcement (now)

- **Document quietly.** Wins, metrics, projects, org context. Save key contacts to personal email/phone. Export only what you are allowed to take.
- **Build a private warm list.** Everyone who hired you, worked for you, paid your invoices (vendors/agencies), or sat in leadership meetings.
- **Draft a one-page capability sheet** (personal device only): 3–4 quantified digital wins in AM/FS, “available immediately for interim, contract, or project work,” contact info.
- **Short-list contract/interim firms** that place digital and marketing talent in the NYC/NJ metro: Aquent, Robert Half Marketing & Creative, Mondo, Scion.
- **Map your real monthly number:** rent, utilities, food, insurance, minimum debt.
- **Review handbook language** on severance, PTO, equity, COBRA, non-compete/non-solicit. Do not signal at work.
- **Strengthen a 4–6 week cash buffer** if possible. Avoid new debt.

Phase 02

## Day of / immediately after announcement

- **Stay professional.** Ask for everything in writing: severance length, PTO payout, equity treatment, benefits end date, COBRA terms, outplacement, reference language, restrictions.
- **Do not sign the same day.** Take it home. Get a quick employment-lawyer read if the package is thin or restrictions are broad.
- **Negotiate what still moves:** more weeks, longer benefits, clean reference, outplacement that includes contract-recruiter access.
- **Confirm last day of health coverage** and final pay timing.
- **File NJ Unemployment the day after separation** (myunemployment.nj.gov). 2026 maximum is $905/week, up to 26 weeks. Layoffs are typically eligible. Certify weekly.
- **Same week — healthcare:** compare COBRA (elect within 60 days, retroactive) vs Get Covered New Jersey under special enrollment from loss of coverage. Price both; subsidies often make the marketplace cheaper. Choose the workable lower-cost option.
- **Register with staffing firms and send the one-pager.** Pitch: senior digital leader with AM experience, available now for interim Head/Director of Digital, digital marketing lead, or project work (site, CRM, demand, analytics). Open to step-down title if pay covers rent.

Phase 03

## Weeks ahead — primary path: digital / AM

Run these in parallel. This remains the main effort while you test demand.

1\.

### Contract / interim staffing

Aquent, Robert Half Marketing & Creative, Mondo, Scion and similar. Interim digital and marketing leadership often pays $80–85+/hour W2 or strong day rates. Leave coverage, projects, and restructures fill faster than permanent Head-of-Digital searches.

2\.

### Direct project and interim work from people who already know you

Call or text your warm list: “I’m available immediately for interim digital leadership or fixed-scope work—audits, site/CRM rebuilds, demand systems, analytics cleanup. Who do you know that’s short-handed?” Offer a clear package: 90-day digital assessment + 30-day roadmap (fixed fee) or 2–3 days/week retainer. Smaller asset managers, RIAs, fintechs, PE-backed firms, and former vendors are the realistic buyers.

3\.

### Step-down digital roles that still pay

Digital Marketing Director/Manager, Marketing Ops, Demand Gen, content and digital systems, agency-side senior on financial-services accounts. Position as an operator who executes, not an empire-builder. Own prior layoffs as industry restructures.

Weekly rhythm

15–20 live conversations in week one, then at least 5 warm conversations per week until money hits. Keep UI certifications current. Revisit healthcare when income changes. Treat Social Security at 62 as last-resort only (permanent reduction + earnings test); model it after you see earned-income options.

Working narrative

“After industry restructures I plug in, fix digital systems that matter, and deliver. Available immediately for interim, contract, or project work.”

Phase 04

## Concurrent / alternative path (alongside digital)

If the digital pipeline is slow or the math on rent is tight, add a parallel track that can produce cash and benefits faster. You do not have to abandon asset-management digital. Run this while consulting and interim outreach continues. Start license research or first conversations on this track only after the immediate bridge is moving (UI + healthcare + staffing registration + warm digital calls). It is a concurrent hedge, not a day-one identity change.

Strongest concurrent options at 62 when coverage and income matter

- **Senior-market insurance sales** (Medicare Advantage/supplements, final expense, life, annuities). Maturity is often an advantage. NJ Life & Health license can be obtained in weeks; many agencies provide training and leads. Look for recoverable draw or small base during ramp, then commission plus residuals; some roles move to W-2 with benefits.
- **In-home home-improvement sales** (bath, windows, roofing, etc.): often base + uncapped commission + benefits with company-provided appointments.
- **Senior living / home-care sales:** base + variable, relationship-driven.

Filter every opportunity the same way

- **Is there a draw or base in the first 90 days?**
- **When do benefits start?**
- **Who supplies leads?**
- **What do new people actually earn in months 1–6?**
- **Avoid pure cold-call 1099 shops with no support.**

Non-negotiables once separated

- File UI the next day.
- Price COBRA vs marketplace the same week.
- Register with staffing firms.
- Make the warm digital calls.
- Protect cash.
- Add the concurrent sales track if digital income is not landing fast enough to cover rent and healthcare.

Prepared as a practical self-help checklist. Not legal, tax, or financial advice. Verify current NJ unemployment amounts, healthcare enrollment rules, and licensing requirements before acting. Employment terms vary by employer and package.
