Milemarker, SS&C's Black Diamond, d1g1t, Zeplyn and AdvizorPro have all shipped an MCP server which is a tool to connect a proprietary AI system. For a smaller, resource-constrained distribution team, the temptation is to treat this as a feature to switch on. It is closer to a new door into your data, and someone has to decide who holds the key.

At Demand Ignition, we help asset managers and wealth managers with lean distribution teams get more sales value out of the third-party data and technology they have already bought. An MCP server for asset managers is the newest place that value is won or lost.

## **What is an MCP server, and why should a distribution team care?**

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server is a governed connection that lets an AI tool such as Claude or ChatGPT search and retrieve data from a business system, instead of someone exporting a spreadsheet and pasting it in. For distribution teams, an assistant could answer "which advisors engaged with our income fund last quarter?" straight from your CRM and purchased advisor data.

AdvizorPro's version, announced in December 2025, offers a read-only interface so AI agents can search its advisor and RIA data without risking unauthorized access. Its CTO put the buyer's concern plainly: enterprises want the benefits of AI, but cannot afford to take risks with their data.

## **Where do MCP connections go wrong?**

They go wrong when firms hook up something they don't understand. A September 2026 analysis of the Black Diamond MCP server argued that "a connection isn't the advisor": the connection authenticates with its own credentials and permission scope, which can be broader than any single user's access. Its advice was to evaluate credentials, permission scope, approval workflow, logging and the system of record, not just the AI tool on the other end.

The same piece cited Practifi's head of product, who said firms spend 15 to 20 hours a month reconciling information across systems for compliance reporting alone. Connect an AI tool to messy, duplicated records and you automate that confusion at speed.

The plumbing is also arriving fast. Milemarker's Firm MCP, launched in September 2026, links more than 140 custodians, CRMs, portfolio systems and planning tools through one governed interface, with firm data staying in the firm's own environment.

The vendors are building the connection. Your job is to make sure there is something worth connecting to.

## **How can a lean team get ready for an MCP server for asset managers?**

Start with the data you already own, not the AI tool you might buy. Three steps cover most of it:

- **Create one source of truth.** Decide whether the CRM or the data platform is the system of record for advisor contact, firm and activity data, and build the system around that.
- **Clean the fields an AI will query.** Duplicates, blank territories and stale advisor-firm links are what turn a fast answer into a wrong one.
- **Set permissions before pilots.** Start read-only, log every query, and give the connection the narrowest scope that answers the question.

A governed CRM and well-used purchased data are what make an MCP server for asset managers pay off.

If your team is weighing an AI connection to its CRM or advisor data, our [services](https://www.demandignition.com/services) start with exactly this groundwork. Engineer Your Demand.

## **Key Takeaways**

- An MCP server gives AI tools governed access to your data, so approve the connection's credentials, scope and logging, not only the assistant.
- Vendors including AdvizorPro, Milemarker and Black Diamond now offer MCP servers, but the payoff depends on clean, well-owned CRM and advisor data.
- Lean distribution teams should pick a system of record, fix the queryable fields, and pilot read-only before expanding access.
